Find your moon

Starting today, (hope my schedule permits) I’ll be writing some personal thoughts to shake you, motivate you, push you towards our dream: Filipino Financial Freedom. I’ll be your online cat whose paws turn into Wolverine’s, to snap you and wake you up. As of today, there are about a thousand plus members of our Facebook group Filipino Financial Freedom Forum – some posting related blogs, some selling glutathione, real estate, businesses which I personally do not understand, and what not. I don’t mind if there will only be 1, 2 or 3 people who will seriously move their finances to higher levels this year. I want to be that little voice online to support you in this endeavor – because you are doing this for yourself, for your (future) family and for the reasons only you know.

To start off the year, ABS-CBN and Citibank came up with steps on how you can grow your money in 2014 (source: http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/business/12/30/13/how-you-can-grow-your-money-2014):

1. Set money goals
2. Keep money records
3. Have a budget
4. Cut expenses
5. Save
6. Invest
7. Live within your means

When I was reading PinoyMoneyTalk forum, a member bluntly said “‘Di ba dapat alam na natin ‘yan.” He actually has a point. Whether we change the wordings, we revise, we put color or tone to the things mentioned above, it’s all been written in all personal finance books, it’s all been said. And me a blubbering bub tells you to do the same. I dream that by end of 2014, there’ll be members testifying that hey, I have achieved 6-months worth of emergency fund, and hey, I was so excited I opened my first stock trading account, or UITF from this bank. It melts my heart everytime I receive emails from readers who share their stories about how they conquered the fear and opened their first mutual fund. Their thank-you’s are melting me like my fave vanilla ice cream. And I just want to say, “Congratulations, Ma’am/Sir. You did it!”

Friends, I want you to find your moon. As what Brendon Burchard said, let us be bold once again, let us have a vision to break boundaries. What’s stopping you? What are your fears? That you can’t talk “bank/financial” lingo? That these intimidating relationship officers would laugh at your initial investment? That you might lose money (it is true there’s risk – no pain, no gain baby). As Brendon continues – Many years ago the great British explorer George Mallory, who was to die on Mount Everest, was asked why did he want to climb it. He said, “Because it is there.”

I want to end this note with the words of President John F. Kennedy on September 12, 1962: “We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too. Well, space is there, and we’re going to climb it, and the moon and the planets are there, and new hopes for knowledge and peace are there. And, therefore, as we set sail we ask God’s blessing on the most hazardous and dangerous and greatest adventure on which man has ever embarked.”

What moves you? What drives you? What excites your soul and your spirit? That it wakes you up everyday, fills your soul with happiness, and keeps you awake at night? The green and red ticker? The soulful music of Italy? The churn of bread machines? The maneuvering engines? The dance in the fields?

Be the best you are. Defy predictions and go break limits. This is going to be your best financial year yet. At the end of 2014, I want each member to have say Php250,000 or maybe Php500,000 cold cash or maybe a million. Whatever the amount – I want you to find your moon and be the best you are. And I want you to fulfill your financial goals at the same time.

Be the best you are. God loves you beyond the stars and the moon.
