The Millionaire Series: Alfonso Gonzales

The Millionaire Series: Alfonso Gonzales

Mr. Alfonso Gonzales invested his Battle of the Brains winnings in Philequity fund in 1998. To date, it has reached more than Php4M.

Dubbed as the mutual fund king, he’s real proof that mutual fund investing can be a money machine.
With his winnings from Battle of the Brains, his Php300,000 investment in 1998 is now worth more than Php4M!
For those of you who can park his money and keep it under a fund manager’s safekeeping for longterm, his story will definitely inspire you.

Thanks to Alfonso Gonzales for allowing me to feature him in the blog and for answering additional questions – sort of interview style. ANC On The Money has done an interview with him in the past, check it out here.

1. How did you start investing?

I learned investing step-by-step after the big Battle of the Brains bonanza worth P 400,000 after tax. It came while I was a student with little needs so I saw the potential for this to grow far. I started with time deposits at 10%/yr in the 1990’s. Then an IPO at Petron Corp which did well. Then stock trading during the very turbulent Asian Financial crisis. Finally I found a good equity fund in the market last Nov 1998 where all of my BOTB investment has been ever since.

2. Who/what inspires you to invest?

I was still young when it all started and so eager to see how far these investments will all go! Friends and family were very supportive, not everyone gets rewarded so early in life, everyone thought it was the right decision to see how far this one-time blessing would stretch.

3. What are your biggest and greatest learnings so far?

Patience is a virtue in investing – this is my mutual fund’s tagline Let time work for you especially when you’re still young. And growing money in investments doesn’t have to be complicated at all – it could be as simple as entrusting your savings with a mutual fund expert who will do the hard work for you for the next 10 years or so.

4. What would you suggest to an ordinary Filipino who has never started saving up or investing?

Do it step-by-step. Start saving a little now and make it a habit. Then try out investing while learning how to do it, in banks, stocks, mutual funds etc. And make sure you have a good, like minded support group (family, friends) who will help you stay on tracking with your investing journey.

5. How do you see yourself in this journey 10 to 20 years from now?

Very likely I’ll still hold on to my investment. Possibly worth millions more And hopefully there are more Pinoys who are with me in this quest for financial security.

For more details, you can read this write-up by ABS-CBN based on his ANC OTM interview.

My dream is to feature more and more Pinoys in the blog to inspire a number of ordinary citizens to begin investing for their future. The wait is definitely more than worth it!
